Hand-cranked Story Box
During this project I created a story box which was manually driven by a hand crank that input force into a gear train. The story box was designed to simulate a fluid motion path of a diver jumping off of a diving board and into the water. The components of the gear train had to be mathematically derived to create a completely synchronized and perfectly looping assembly. I initially used drawings in a stop motion style to create a storyboard to visualize the final motion path. I then created a card board prototype of the gear train to refine the concepts before mathematically deriving the correct measurements for all of the geared components. Using CAD I was then able to model the story box and animate it to identify any flaws in the motion path or synchronization. I then fabricated the design using a combination of 3D printed and laser cut components for assembly.
